Food Grade Lubricants

Main categories of food-grade lubricants according to their NSF registration type and application.

H1 Lubricants

Lubricants used in applications where it is technically impossible to avoid incidental contact with food.

These products can be used in applications where there is a possibility of incidental contact with edible products. The minimum necessary amount of material must be used on the equipment.

The use of these lubricants is common in all types of machinery located near food processing areas, such as chains, conveyor belts, ovens, pelletizers, and countless other pieces of equipment where accidental contact cannot be ruled out.

H2 Lubricants

Lubricants for general application in the food industry where there is no possibility of contact with food.

These products can be used as lubricants in food processing areas and surrounding environments where there is no possibility of contact with edible products.

Products in this category are not considered food grade as such; however, their use is important because they comply with FDA CFR 21 requirements, ensuring they will not have adverse effects when properly used.

3H Lubricants

Registration category for lubricants and/or release agents that have direct contact with food.

These products can be used on grills, ovens, and other hard surfaces that come into direct contact with food to prevent sticking during processing. They are allowed to have direct contact with food.

Examples of processes where these materials are necessary include bakery operations to prevent bread from sticking to molds, as well as similar applications in confectionery production.
